Civil and structural engineering for an innovative elevated structure

Didsbury High School faced the need for expansion to accommodate increased numbers of students, requiring additional specialist classrooms and office space. The proposed solution was a second-floor extension, however, the architectural vision presented a distinct engineering challenge. The new building was to be constructed on striking raking stilts: visually dynamic, but demanding an innovative and robust structural solution to elevate it above the existing school grounds and integrate seamlessly with the current building.

Solution and Impact

KODA was commissioned to provide comprehensive civil and structural engineering services for this unique project. The architectural concept, particularly the use of raking stilts, required our structural engineering team to think creatively and analytically. The primary task was to design a stable, secure, high-level extension that could be safely supported by this unconventional structural system.

This involved intricate analysis of load distribution, connection details between the new stilts and the existing frame, and careful consideration of wind loads and dynamic effects. As an added constraint, the final design needed to facilitate a construction approach that would minimise disruption to the ongoing operations of the active school environment as far as reasonably possible.

Outcome and Impact

KODA's specialist structural engineering expertise successfully translated Didsbury High School's bold architectural vision into a tangible reality. Our innovative solution for the raking stilts not only ensures the complete safety and stability of the new extension but also enhances the building's aesthetic appeal, creating a landmark feature for the school. The project delivers vital new educational facilities, significantly improving the school's capacity and providing an inspiring, modern learning environment for students and staff.
